In this very interesting video of a masterclass with renowned pianist and educator, Hal Galper describes the importance of having a strong aural imagination in order to take your playing to another level.  He demonstrates this with a volunteer as well.  Even though he is relating most of what he says to improvisation, the basis of his message is applicable to all musicians who want to develop and execute what they play more vividly.
